Marlins expect Stanton to miss rest of MLB season

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will miss the rest of the MLB season because of a groin injury.
Stanton was presumed to be headed to the disabled list on Sunday pending the results of an MRI, but Marlins manager Don Mattingly termed the injury as "serious" and revealed three-time All-Star is not expected to play again in 2016.
The 2014 Silver Slugger was injured in Saturday's 8-7 loss against the Chicago White Sox trying to stretch a single into a double with two outs in the ninth inning.
"It's a Grade three strain of his groin," Marlins president Michael Hill said following Sunday's 5-4 win over the White Sox. "We're going to rehab it, and best-case scenario is a six-week return.
"Obviously, there is still opportunity for G to be back this season's end. But obviously, it was a significant injury and we'll see how rehab goes."
Stanton, 26, had three hits and three RBIs, including a solo home run before the injury. He is currently batting .244/.329/.496 with 25 home runs and 70 RBIs this season.
This is the third consecutive season Stanton's campaign has ended prematurely due to injury, and it is a major blow to the Marlins, who are chasing their first postseason berth since 2003.
Earlier this week, reports claimed the Marlins were interested in signing released designated hitter Alex Rodriguez, who has a home in Miami. Rodriguez is just four home runs shy of 700 for his career, so he will likely want to latch on with a team to end the season.
On top of the groin injury, Stanton has dealt with a hip injury this season. It is unclear whether the two are related.
